Match report: Rigby helps Yarnbury 2 hit North Ribb hard

By Billy North Lewis

Yarnbury 2 displayed their best rugby of the season to win what looks to be a decisive win to stay top of the league courtesy of some Rigby magic.

Another bus trip to the misty mountains of Settle saw Yarnbury 2 play against one of their biggest rivals North Ribb with hopes of remaining top of the table and seeking to avenge their late 29-29 draw in their last encounter.

With no try to show at the start of the game an Ole Rigby penalty would open the scoring for Yarnbury with an easy attempt in front of the posts.

Ole Rigby on the attack.

He would take charge of the first try of the match after some quick dummying, the illustrious fly half saw himself score the try with a conversion to add on; what a start indeed for Yarnbury.

However, it wouldn’t take long for Ribb to bag their first try with Jake Tilburn breaking through the Yarnbury defence to score under the posts.

Fly half Joe Richards scored the conversion to narrow Yarnbury’s lead to three points. A successful Ribb lineout saw them dominate Yarnbury from their 22-metre line for try number two from Ryan Middleton to take his side into the lead for the first time in this match.

The wind would pull Richards’ conversion just shy of the posts for no converted try. Yarnbury would win a lineout of their own and the ball would go into the hands of Rigby who made this match just too easy for him as he scored his second try.

Another easy conversion from the fly half would follow up for Yarnbury to lead 12-17.

Some quick footwork by Richards managed to create space for the on-rushing Andy Thwaite for try three.

Richards scored a vital conversion to put Ribb back into the lead by two points.

The final play of the first half was a Rigby penalty to put his side 19-20 up at half time.

The second half saw Rigby the Ribb slayer continue cutting The Stags with another fine penalty to bolster Yarnbury’s lead again.

After a tense ten minutes Yarnbury secured their third try; great show of strength and power from James Longhawn seeing him dive over the line with the biggest cheer so far from the Yarnbury crowd.

For the bonus point try, Yarnbury would need the pace of winger Jem Windridge-France with a great offload by scrum half Harrison Eaton. Rigby would continue upping his points tally to 25 points after another successful conversion.

Head coach Steve Lee wanted this game to be put to bed at this point and his team certainly did that with the final try being scored by Eaton, going from try assist to a try and a final conversion by Rigby.

What a win this would be for Yarnbury 2s as they win what possibly is if not their biggest win of the season. Next up will be an away trip to Leeds Medics with big confidence after a historic win. Final score in Settle after another triumphant bus trip, North Ribb 19, Yarnbury 42.
