Mark’s History: How the memory of a Rodley Bombardier lives on

In the third of four posts coinciding with Remembrance Day, Mark Stevenson photographs the former homes of some of the brave West Leeds soldiers who gave their lives serving their country so many years ago…

“IN OUR HEARTS HIS MEMORY LIVES” is the personal inscription that Amy Roberts of 4 Cowley Road, Rodley, wanted on her husband’s headstone.

Amy’s husband Joseph Roberts was, before the war, a Crane Fitter and Amy was a Woollen Weaver.

They had married in 1910 and had possibly hoped to have children together.  However, in July 1915 Amy knew this was never going to happen.

Bombardier Joseph Herbert Roberts of the Royal Field Artillery 1st/2nd Bty. 1st/1st (West Riding) Bde died on the 11th July 1915 aged 26.
