Buffaloes bulletin: Treble evades brave Bramley

0
Bramley Buffaloes' final squad

By Paul Abraham

And so, quite rightly the best two teams in the division by a country mile went to Featherstone and in an entertaining match played in a great spirit – the Buffaloes just failed in their attempt to do a clean sweep and win the treble.

With Dodworth getting out of the blocks at a faster pace than the “Buffs” they sprinted to an early 14-0 lead.

The Bramley side picked up the pace and Keiran Hudson crossed for a try to see the first half finish with a score of Buffaloes 4 Miners 14.

Kieran Hudson, Bramley Buffaloes

Again, it was the South Yorkshire side who started the half better and a converted try put them into an 20-4 lead.

Tries by Keiran Hudson and Codey Downey brough the “Buffs” back into the game at 12-20, sadly as the Bramley fans were dreaming of a late, late victory Dodworth scored again to take them into a 26-12 lead.

Keiran Hudson completed his hat-trick just before the game ended with a 16-26 defeat for the gallant Black and Ambers. Fair play to the Dodworth Miners side who deserved their victory on the day and the Bramley club congratulate them.

A League Leaders Title and the YML Trophy to show for all the hard work and efforts during the season and the Buffaloes can look back on a highly successful season.

The treble may have been lost but everyone at the club deserves to be congratulated for a great season and some spectacular tries and matches to remember.

Walter Garside

Recently we featured Walter Garside in our latest “legends” article and, together with a couple of programmes which featured Walter, we were able to pass them over with copies of the “legends” article to his son Phil who sent us the following message.

“He read the Bramley legends article over and over again and he could recall all the names in the programmes. Even some of the ads: Bramley steam laundry, in particular, stirred up old memories for some reason.

“The programmes and the Bramley Legends write up certainly brought a smile to his face and he could clearly recall his time at Bramley.

“Many thanks for pulling the information together – It certainly made his day. Kind Regards, Phil.”

Bramley Baths reveals successful year – and plans to launch community shares

Bramley Baths held a pre-AGM walk in Bramley Park.

By John Baron

Community led Bramley Baths has enjoyed another successful year, its AGM has heard.

Over the past year more than 1,000 children have taken private swimming lessons at the Baths, with a total 1,511 individual members learning how to swim at the independent leisure centre.

The AGM heard that as of July the Baths has 950 monthly members, compared to 140 pre-2020. The Baths has also trained up dozens of new lifeguards.

The AGM also heard of plans to install new photo voltaic solar panels early next year to reduce costs and reduce the building’s carbon footprint. There are also plans to submit large-scale funding bids and launch a community share offer to support work on the Grade II Listed Edwardian building.

Edwardian Grade II Listed Bramley Baths is at the heart of the community.

Bramley Baths chair Nick Quin said: “I was pleased to report back to the AGM that the Baths has had another successful year. 120 years after the Baths opened it is now a successful, sustainable social enterprise putting the people of Bramley first.

“We also announced our plans to run a share offer later this year. We’ll be inviting people to invest in the Baths to secure its long-term future, so keep your eyes peeled for news of how you can own a slice of Bramley’s heritage.”

Eleven people have completed a new volunteering programme at the Baths and more than 100 children took part in the second annual Sir John Battle Swimming Gala.

The Baths has been community led since 2013. This year marks the 120th anniversary since the Baths opened its doors in 1904. It is the last functioning Edwardian bath house in Leeds.

Cafe extension could be demolished at Owlcotes Centre

Plans to demolish an extension which used to host a cafe at Marks & Spencer’s Owlcotes store have been submitted to Leeds City Council.

The cafe area, which has relocated to downstairs in the store, would be demolished and replaced with seven extra parking spaces for shoppers at the Owlcotes Centre.

A design statement accompanying the plans said: “There will be no impact to the operation of the existing cafe as this has ceased to operate from the single storey side extension and now operates from the larger café at basement level.

“The demolition of the projecting display window will not alter the store layout or access.”

The proposals can be viewed in full here.

Farsley Celtic secure FA Cup win against Hallam FC

By John Baron

Farsley Celtic came away from the world’s oldest football ground with a 3-1 win to secure their place in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup.

But the Celts were forced to fight for their win at Sandywell by a committed Hallam side who gave it a good go, despite being three leagues below them. The game was held in Sheffield due to delays surrounding the installation of a new artificial pitch at Farsley’s Citadel ground.

Emerging Talent Squad rookie Liam Wilson made his first start for Farsley in goal in what was otherwise a full strength Farsley starting 11.

The visitors were 2-0 up within the opening 20 minutes thanks to goals from Tom Allan and Darren Stephenson, but the home side pulled one back when a hopeful ball into the area looped over keeper Wilson.

Stephenson added a spectacular third for Farsley 15 minutes from time. The hosts pressed hard to get back into the game and hit the crossbar late on.

The game started well for the visitors. Tom Allan bundled home from close range following a goalmouth scramble on seven minutes after Manny Mampala failed to convert.

And when striker Darren Stephenson raced free of the Hallam defence to coolly slot home on 18 minutes, it looked like it might be a comfortable afternoon for the National League North side.

But Hallam pulled one back on 25 minutes. Former Czech Republic international Daniel Pudil punted the ball into the Farsley area from a good 30 yards out. His effort looped over keeper Liam Wilson and under the crossbar to send the home fans into raptures.

The second half was largely a scrappy affair.

On 58 minutes Ben Atkinson’s shot from the edge of the box was palmed wide by the Hallam goalkeeper. Then, with 15 minutes remaining, Darren Stephenson grabbed his second of the game in spectacular style, as he fired into the top corner from just inside the box.

But the home side weren’t ready to throw in the towel.

On 83 minutes they were almost back in it when a shot from Allan was spilled by young keeper Wilson, but the rebound was somehow put over the bar by Ward from three yards out.

Hallam came even closer to pulling one back in the 89th minute when Salt’s shot on the turn cannoned back off the Farsley crossbar.

The Celts will have been happy to avoid a potential banana skin against tough lower league opponents. Manager Pav Singh, who has secured two wins and a draw from three away games following the departure of head coach Clayton Donaldson, will be looking forward to tomorrow’s Emirates FA Cup Third Qualifying draw..

Farsley return to league action on Saturday (3pm) when they play Leamington in a ‘home’ game which will be played ay Alfreton’s Impact Arena due to Farsley’s pitch being out of action.

  • Farsley Celtic Women today slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Skipton.

In photos: Farsley’s Aston Martin Day proves a major success

0

On Saturday morning 27 Aston Martin cars did a short tour of Farsley before arriving at Sunny Bank Mills at 10.30am and leaving from noon.

The owners were there to offer mines of information and anecdotes to a very inquisitive public. Ivor Hughes was there with his camera.

Favourite on the day, hardly surprisingly, was a green 1956 Aston Martin DB2/4 three litre sports car that was part of David Brown’s 1950s production in Farsley (pictured above). The reward on the day was an edible Aston Martin offered by The Farsley Cake Company (below).

Other cars receiving plenty of attention included YNC 191L – a red 1972 Aston Martin DBS V8 Series 2, C8 SRA – a silver 2021 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera and XOO 7 – a silver 1978 Aston Martin 5340cc V8.

Another receiving more attention than most was the curiosity of the day, 100 WXJ – a blue 2012 Aston Martin Cygnet S with an engine capacity of 1329cc (all four pictured).

Farsley Celtic provide pitch update – and appointment of new CEO

0
The Citadel is the home of Farsley Celtic.

By John Baron

Farsley Celtic have announced that work is set to restart on laying their new artificial pitch, following delays.

The Celts are hoping to lay a new 4G pitch at the Citadel but work stopped more than a month ago after the grass pitch was lifted and an unspecified problem was found.

Work to tackle the issue is now due to start on Monday, 23 September with work on installing the new pitch starting the following week.

It’s hoped the pitch will be completed ‘well in time’ for the Spennymoor home game on Saturday, 19 October.

Chairman Paul Barthorpe today said: “These issues relate to the historical use of the site, and its impact on the ground beneath. Unfortunately the impacts of this weren’t detectable until we dug down to begin works.

“Their on-site activity to resolve our issue is seven days – due to the delay they have agreed to work through the weekend to help us catch up on time. They will be on site w/c 23rd September, so we will get the site back on the 1st of October.

“Between now and their commencement date on the 23rd they will be double checking the on-site readings, and will also be doing an additional survey for us in preparation for the floodlights planning application which is being worked on and submitted once the pitch is completed.

“The league are fully aware of all events and have been very co-operative with us to date.
They allowed us to switch a number of home games to away games, but going forwards (including the Leamington game) we have to hire out alternative venues and play them as home games. While disappointing in terms of club finance, fans wanting to watch us play at home and asking fans to travel is unfortunately a short term pain we are going to have to deal with.

“But once the pitch is down it will benefit the club for the next decade, so I have to be positive about the situation and say a few extra weeks damage to my wallet and frustration in the bigger picture is a small price to pay.

“This process hasn’t been easy, and is already hugely over budget and way behind time, but this is the reality of large scale construction and we will just have to accept this and see it through as the changes it will make to our club are significant and will continue to be for years to come.”

Farsley travel to Hallam in the FA Cup tomorrow and then play their first ‘home’ game of the season against Leamington at Alfreton FC’s ground. The Celts have so far played their opening eight National League North games away from home, along with nine pre-season games.

Amid a raft of announcements today, the club also announced the appointment of a new CEO.

Jon Wickham owns three local businesses and has pledged to ‘bridge the gap’ between the club and the community.

He said: “As a lifelong fan of the club, stepping into this role was an easy decision for me. I am super passionate about the club and committed to bringing my experiences within business to help drive our club forward.

“One of my primary goals is to bridge the gap between the club and our community. FCFC has always been a community-centred club and I believe the future success both on and off the pitch will be directly tied to the strength of our relationships with local businesses and the supporters of the club.

“Over the rest of the season and beyond I’ll be reaching out and engaging with the community on all levels to explore how we can work together to not just benefit the club but the wider community as well.”

The Celts have also appointed Jack Wickham as new marketing and media manager.
