St John’s Church in Farsley will be providing night shelter for up to 10 asylum seekers in the New Year – and are appealing for volunteers to help support them.
The church, which provided a similar refuge for asylum seekers earlier this year, will provide sanctuary between Thursday, January 10 to Monday, January 28.
A church spokesperson said:
“People seeking refugee protection in the UK are often at risk of homelessness and poverty. The UK’s asylum system is complex, and there are a number of points in the process where, because people have no recourse to public funds and no right to work, there is a risk of destitution.”
The church will be modified to accommodate the group utilising the recently renovated changing room toilets into a wash-room. St John’s will establish sleeping quarters with a modesty curtain to provide much-needed private space.
