Farsley Celtic start pre-season with emphatic win as off-field announcements continue

By John Baron

Farsley Celtic kicked off their pre-season campaign with an emphatic 6-1 win at Dearne & District.

The Celts were 5-0 up at half time thanks to a brace from Danny Greenfield, and goals from gaffer Clayton Donaldson, Sam Leverett and Manny Mampala.

The Celts changed most of their team at half time, and the second half was a more even affair.

The home side pulled a goal back when Enzo finished from a tight angle. But a spectacular Darren Stephenson thunderbolt from 25 yards added to the Celts’ tally shortly afterwards.

The Dearne keeper pulled off a number of decent saves throughout the game and the hosts were much improved in the second half.

Boss Clayton Donaldson will be pleased by his side’s display as they start to build up their fitness ahead of the new season – they’ve already beaten last season’s meagre tally of two goals in six pre-season friendlies.

The Celts travel to Bradford on Tuesday as they continue their pre-season with a friendly at Eccleshill United.

Club announcements

The club have strengthened their back-room staff by bringing in former first team player and coach Gary Chapman, along with former manager of Route One and Silsden U23s, Sokii Abbas. They join Farsley as performance analysts and recruitment leads.

Director of football Pav Singh said: “I am delighted to have these two on board. Analysis and breaking down clips are their expertise and strength, as well as identifying young talent and players who fit our ethos.”

Next season will also see the introduction of the men’s reserves, men’s U23s, and the start of a veterans’ team. The club is looking for a first team squad of around 23 players.

WLD understands work is due to start on digging up the existing grass pitch at The Citadel on Tuesday (9 July, 2024) ahead of a new artificial pitch being laid. The Celts have agreement from the National League to play their August games away from home to allow time for the new pitch to be installed.
