New low sensory gym sessions will launch on Saturday at Armley Leisure Centre.
It is a council-run public facility that has been used by people of all ages. For people who need support, who are neurodivergent, have disabilities or may be worried about going to a gym, lack confidence about going to a gym or haven’t been to one before.
Armley’s gym facilities had a full refit less than 16 months ago. It now boasts state-of-the-art new equipment, with over 120 workout stations, including free weights, weight machines and cardio.
Staff have been trained in equality and diversity and he is keen to make sure everybody feels comfortable using the centre.
Attendees can expect to find a space with no television screens, no flashing lights and no music. Members will find it adheres to low sensory session rules which include respecting personal space and keeping noise to a minimum.
People are welcome to bring their own music as many love to work out to music, as long as they use their earphones.
There are also silent panic buttons which can send an alert through to reception. The centre has accessible, changing places accessible toilets, that can be used by anyone when visiting the centre.
There is ground-floor level access into the building with car parking facilities outside and a lift inside take you upstairs to gym.
Memberships are available.
