Bramley parkrun marks ninth birthday and features Rob Burrow tribute

By Jean Hollings

Bramley parkrun celebrated its ninth birthday with a special run around Bramley Park.

Bramley parkrun has 6,371 people registered as their home parkrun. Over the years they have had 1,181 volunteers with 10,031 participants (walking and or running), with an average of 165 people completing the event and 29 volunteers on a weekly basis.

Cllr Kevin Ritchie said: “Set up costs were initially funded from our Inner West Community Committee Wellbeing fund. It is probably the best Public Health investment ever made from the fund.’

Cllr Tom Hinchcliffe also praised the contribution of the team at Bramley parkrun. “The work of these dedicated volunteers have made people’s lives happier and healthier. Couldn’t be more grateful!” he added.

Celebration: Bramley parkrun participants.

The core team wanted to celebrate their ninth birthday whilst remembering Rob Burrow CBE with the Leeds parkrun community.

Saturday morning’s weather was also feeling sad, being overcast and damp, however this didn’t deter the 36 volunteers who cheered on the 210 finishers following a countdown from seven at 9.07am.

It was a fitting and emotional tribute to see volunteers and participants wearing Rob Burrow marathon or Leeds Rhinos T-shirts, with many going to Headingley stadium afterwards

A few parkrun milestones were also celebrated: Lyndsey Cook on volunteering at her 50th parkrun and Bernie Marks on completing 25 parkruns.

With grateful thanks to Gareth Semmence, who made and designed a special event cake featuring number 9 to mark Bramley parkrun’s birthday, Leeds Rhinos colours and Rob Burrow’s quote of ‘in a world full of adversity we must dare to dream’.
