Aire Place Studios founder launches artist development programme

The founder of Kirkstall Road-based Aire Place Studios has launched a free artist development and mentoring programme.

Leeds-based artist Sarah Francis, announces the launch of The Resilient Artist Cohort—designed to support six emerging or early-career artists living in Leeds.

Applications open 1 May 2025, with the programme running from June to October 2025. Hosted at The Mill Gallery, the initiative includes tailored mentorship, professional development workshops, and two public exhibitions.

“There was a point in my own practice when I realised what I needed wasn’t another glossy promo pack—it was someone in my corner,” said Ms Francis.

“Mentoring changed my direction, my confidence, and my sense of community. That’s what this programme is all about—real conversations, shared learning, and genuine support.”

What artists receive:

  • 1:1 tailored mentorship
  • Artist-led workshops on curation, funding, and sustainability
  • A £250 bursary
  • Collaboration and exhibition opportunities
  • Ongoing peer support and access to gallery workspace

The programme supports artists working in wall-based or small plinth formats, who have at least five exhibition-ready artworks, have been out of formal education for at least two years, and live within a Leeds postcode (LS).

A key aim of the programme is to strengthen peer networks and offer accessible, meaningful support for artists who often feel disconnected or excluded from traditional art world pathways.

The Resilient Artist Cohort strongly encourages applications from underrepresented artists, including those from Global Ethnic Majority backgrounds, disabled artists, LGBTQ+ creatives, and those facing socio-economic barriers.

In addition to the cohort, Francis will deliver 15 subsidised mentoring sessions specifically for disabled and neurodiverse artists, recognising the need for more inclusive and tailored support within the sector.

  • Applications Open: 1 May 2025
  • Deadline: 15 May 2025
  • Programme Begins: 7 June 2025

Exhibition one run 15 August to 5 September, exhibition two runs 12 September to 3 October at The Mill Gallery, Leeds.

Ms Francis, a queer, ADHD, dyslexic artist, has spent over a decade building inclusive creative spaces across Leeds, including Aire Place Studios, Mill Gallery, and The Other Studios. Since 2016, she has supported 1,400+ artists, launched 76 exhibitions, and facilitated 36 artist studios.

She added: “This isn’t just about giving opportunities—it’s about artists seeing their own value, and each other’s. It’s about shaping a creative culture that doesn’t leave anyone behind.

“If you’re not ready to apply for the cohort, don’t worry—subsidised public workshops and mentoring opportunities will also be available throughout the year as part of the wider programme.”
