A petition to save the Abbey House Museum from closure by Leeds City Council has now surpassed 6,500 signatures, with campaigners setting 7,500 as their next milestone.
Launched in late December by Burley resident Stuart Long, the petition has gained attention as protests against the council’s cost-cutting proposal continue.
“This museum provides an opportunity for children, families, students, and scholars alike to immerse themselves in historical eras that have shaped our city and indeed our nation,” the petition states.
“The importance of preserving these landmarks cannot be overstated, as the erosion of our historical fabric leaves future generations impoverished of cultural heritage.”
Leeds City Council says that the Abbey House Museum closure could save £160,000 amid severe financial pressures, including a £106.4m budget shortfall for 2025/26.
Council chiefs are set to decide the final 2025/26 budget next month (February 2025).
