Wortley: Improvements for footpath used by Leeds United fans

By Katherine Turner

Wortley paths used by Leeds United fans on match days are set to receive a much-needed resurfacing.

The ginnel between Whitehall Road and Gelderd Road has been long overdue repairs with uneven path surfaces, poor lighting and overgrown vegetation.

Resurfacing works and vegetation clearing is due to start on 7 July in Wortley and will leave this popular route closed until 18 July between the hours of 9.30am and 3.30pm.

The ginnel is known locally as the cut through for Leeds United fans heading to Elland Road, but is also used by local commuters.

Concerned Wortley residents raised issues of overgrown vegetation to Councillor Adrian McCluskey (Lab, Farnley & Wortley), who was pleased when Leeds City Council agreed to not only clear the area but also resurface it.

Cllr McCluskey said: “This is a well-trodden path, and not just on match days.

“I’m really pleased that LCC recognises it as a popular ginnel for workers as well as LUFC supporters. The path also connects two wards, Farnley & Wortley to Beeston & Holbeck. It’s great to see LCC investing in this part of our city.”

  1. Not before time and should help stop what sometimes becomes a very congested route. Don’t think it’s been repaired since the railway footbridge over the “Leeds NewLine” was demolished and Searches expanded it’s storage yards!
