A real Mothers Day treat saw Wortley Girls under 16s beat Tingley Athletic 5-1 on Sunday in Wetherby to progress to the final of the West Riding Girls Football League shield competition, writes Becky Doggett.
Having already faced Tingly Athletic twice in the league this season the Wortley Girls’ knew they were in for a tough test at the neutral venue of Wetherby Athletic under the glorious rays of the first weekend of Spring.
The team put together a brilliant performance with every player on the pitch working hard and supporting one another.
Wortley opened the scoring midway through the first period and doubled their lead a short while after with a brace from Shannon.
Tingley however, came back shortly before the break with a goal of their own, typifying the dogged determination which characterised their performance
With everything to play for in the second half, both sides battled well in the midday sun.
As the second period progressed Wortley gradually gained the upper hand and extended their lead. Chloe turned and finished well with a long range drive to make it 3-1.
With the two goal cushion reestablished Wortley began to take control of the game, and despite some neat passing football from the Tingley side Wortley pressed home to further their lead.
Shannon made it first to an in-swinging corner to cap off her hat-rick before Olivia sealed the victory with a delightful fifth for the side.
Wortley now turn their focus back to the league, playing Ilkley at home on Sunday before facing Beckwithshaw in the final of the competition in May.
