Wortley church invites you to Welcome Home Festival

By Katherine Turner

St John’s Church on Dixon Lane Road is throwing open its doors and inviting the whole community to join in its Welcome Home Festival.

It has been described as a celebration of belonging, creativity and connection. It is being held on the 13th and 14th of September and will include a full weekend of music, activity, art and joy.

At the heart of the event will be a special art exhibition, raffle tickets which are currently on sale for ÂŁ1, with lots of fabulous prizes to win.

On Saturday evening at 7.30pm there will be a lively, fun barbershop quartet and a rousing brass band. There will be a barbecue, Messy Church activities also on the Saturday and on Sunday 14, a special church service with Crypt Chaplain Andy Muckle with the raffle and refreshments closing the festival.

Reverend Chris Balding told WLD: “The idea is simple but powerful, everyone needs a place where they feel at home.

“Whether it’s the warmth of a familiar face, the joy of shared stories or the beauty of creative expression. Home is more than just a building, it is the people, the welcome and the love. This festival will capture that spirit.

“The Welcome Home Festival will be a place to share, celebrate and to feel part of something bigger. Whether you come to showcase your art, enjoy the concert, try your luck in the raffle or simply soak up the atmosphere. You are invited to be part of the welcome.”

The popular church has always tried to keep community at the heart of all it does. The church is calling on local artists of all ages and abilities to contribute. If you can paint, draw, sew, sculpt or create in any medium they will welcome your contribution. All submissions will be on display for visitors to enjoy.

Tickets for the Saturday evening are available to purchase now and cost ÂŁ5 in advance or ÂŁ6 on the door.
