‘Unsympathetic’ takeaway storage container refused permission

Council planners have blocked planning permission for an ‘unsympathetic, incongruous and out-of-context’ storage container behind the Shandar hot food takeaway in Thornbury.

The takeaway owners applied for retrospective permission for a metal storage container at the junction of Gain Lane and Sunnybank Lane, just to the north of the A647 Leeds and Bradford Road.

A planning statement submitted with the application stated: “The metal container is being used for storage associated with the existing takeaway business as storage only.

“The existing takeaway has insufficient storage space and so the current occupier had this container placed on site around the beginning of 2021 to help him with extra storage space associated with the operating takeaway business.”

There had been one objection from a neighbour.

A planning officer’s report rejecting the application stated: “The storage container is considered to detract from the character of the area and to negatively impact on visual and residential amenity and as such refusal is recommended.”

It concluded: “…The container is placed on a yard area with its appearance not fitting with the immediate surroundings and is considered as harmful in a wider context.

“It is considered that there may be more acceptable solutions to the need for additional storage. As such, on balance the proposal is considered contrary to policy and planning permission should be refused.”
