Unit 11 celebrates first birthday with world record bunting attempt – and applauds Kirkstall’s Covid-19 response

Unit 11 Community Hub celebrates its first birthday in September and what a year it has been – something of a baptism of fire – most recently becoming a Covid-19 support centre for the Kirkstall ward, writes Adele Rae.

We’ve been co-ordinating over 300 volunteers to provide support to Kirkstall residents who are either vulnerable, elderly, living in poverty, self-isolating and in need.

We have seen the Kirkstall community pull together in the face of adversity.

Our beautiful Abbey was never one of the most powerful or richest of the Cistercian Abbeys, but it was always known for its community – 900 years later it seems nothing has changed.

To celebrate this achievement we have asked our resident knitting and crocheting group the Hookers and Clickers (do it for charity) and our Knitters and Natterers, to get us started with our ambitious Guinness World Record attempt for the Longest chain of Knitted/Crochet Bunting.

The bunting will run from the length of the Kirkstall Ward, from Kirkstall Forge past Kirkstall Abbey to the Kirkstall Viaduct – a length of nearly four miles.

Adele Rae, Community Director of the Kirkstall Valley Development Trust and manager of Unit 11 Community Hub, is hopeful of achieving the target of four miles of bunting in time for the first birthday celebrations and welcomes contributions from anyone who would like to get involved.
