Swinnow swimmer Aaryan, 8, makes waves for Children in Need

By Helen Garrand

Eight-year-old Aaryan Mitra from Swinnow is proving that determination, heart, and a splash of courage can make a big difference.

Last year he swam 1,500m for Children In Need, and this year he has gone that extra mile – or should we say miles. During October Aaryan swam 10 miles in the hope of raising a £1,000 for Children In Need which helps to support children and young people across the UK in rebuilding their lives.

Aaryan attends Park Spring Primary School and despite his autism has excelled in his swimming. He now swims for Leeds Stage 8 Competitive Team and Bradford Dolphins.

“Having autism doesn’t stop you from making a difference to other people’s lives,” says Aaryan, whose passion for swimming has grown over the past two years.

It is his positivity and passion for fundraising which has seen Aaryan nominated for several awards, the latest involving a trip to London to True Little Hero Awards where he was awarded medal.

Aaryan is also going to be releasing two books shortly. The first book is called ‘We’re All Unique We’re All Superheroes’.

He hopes his story will inspire others to embrace their strengths. His second book is a children’s Trilogy called ‘The Hidden Lab’. In this book a group of Neurodivergent children find a secret laboratory under their school.

Proud mum Shivarna Mitra said: “I am proud of Aaryan and all of his achievements. He has faced a great deal of stigma throughout his life due to him being  (Autistic) Neurodivergent.

“The fact that Autism can be a barrier, Aaryan has the determination to prove everyone wrong. He is so humble and wants to make a change for those who are Neurodivergent, which makes me again so very proud.”

With every stroke, Aaryan is not only pushing his physical limits but also promoting the importance of inclusivity, resilience, and community spirit. You can see Aaryan at Bramley Christmas Light Switch On on 28 November as he helps to turn on the lights.
