Twelve children from Swinnow Community Centre have created a Christmas project called Boxes of Joy to encourage and support local residents this festive season.
The group includes children from reception age up to year eight. They worked together to plan the contents, design the look of each box, and organise how the gifts would be shared.
The children said they wanted the boxes to go to neighbours, friends, and people who may be vulnerable or feeling alone this Christmas.

Mia, age nine, said: “I wanted to make something that would make people smile when they open it.”
Morgan, age nine, said: “We thought about what we’d like to get at Christmas, and then we packed the boxes with those things.”
And nine-year-old Jessica added: “It feels good to help our community. I hope the boxes show people that we care.”
The team decorated each box and filled them with small gifts and treats chosen to lift spirits and show kindness. The Boxes of Joy will be shared with residents over the coming days.
Lucy Munton, centre manager, said: “It was incredible to see local children wanting to bless local people at this time of year. All the kids have been so selfless, thoughtful and considerate – the joy is certainly coming to Swinnow this year.”
The project is funded by the Love Your Neighbour initiative.
