A Leeds-based charity has showcased its lifeline work through a family cookery group held at a Bramley school.
Flourishing Families Leeds (FFL) is dedicated to supporting vulnerable families through a range of innovative programs, including cookery clubs, literacy initiatives, and wellbeing support.
The cookery group, held at St Peter’s Primary School, addresses critical issues such as food poverty and poor nutrition, and teaching families how to prepare healthy, low-cost meals from scratch.
FFL hosted Leeds West and Pudsey MP Rachel Reeves on Friday. The visit highlighted the charity’s impactful work within the Chancellor’s home constituency, showcasing the innovative and holistic approach that FFL takes to empower families.
During the visit, Ms Reeves was invited to participate in the family cookery groups, with staff providing a comprehensive overview of the charity’s activities, which aim to enable entire families to thrive.
Programmes include family cookery groups, family literacy and reading programmes which counter the debilitating effects of low family literacy, mentoring groups for primary school children which address wellbeing and mental health issues, and family support groups for parents with preschool children.
Ms Reeves chatted with families participating in the Family Cookery Group, observing the practical application of FFL’s mission to combat food poverty. Families shared their experiences, including the day’s recipe, harvest pork casserole, and the positive impact FFL has had on them.
Flourishing Families’ CEO, Kate Colbrook, said: “We were delighted to welcome the Chancellor to see firsthand the work we do to support vulnerable families.
“Her engagement with our team and the families we serve is a testament to the importance of community-driven initiatives in creating lasting change.”
Reflecting on the visit, Rachel Reeves added: “I had a wonderful time visiting the Flourishing Families Cookery Club today at Bramley St Peter’s Primary School. It was a pleasure to meet Kate, her amazing team and all the families supported by this incredible charity.”
By addressing critical challenges such as food poverty, low literacy, and social isolation, FFL aims to create thriving communities where every family has the opportunity to succeed.
