A new cafe has opened in Calverley with a familiar face behind the counter. Saeed Hussain was often seen working at the Post Office for his mum Waheeda before it closed. Now he has a shop of his own in the village.
Cravings by Sid opened its doors on Saturday, selling sandwiches, cakes, deli items, hot and cold drinks and bread. Based in the former Calverley Deli, just a few doors down from the old Post Office, the cafe will be open Wednesdays to Sundays, 10am to 2.30pm, then 3 to 9pm.
Saeed, 22, has been studying for his degree in hospitality, but when it came to job hunting, there wasn’t much around. As a Calverley lad, he’d always been part of village life and wanted to work locally. So when the opportunity came to take over the deli, he took it.
“I didn’t just want to offer food, I wanted it to be a place for the kids to come, for the families to come and for the older people to come,” he said.
“They can feed their food cravings and their social cravings, that’s by it’s called Cravings by Sid!’
It was a busy first day in the shop, with many well-wishers and extra help from Waheeda and Asaf who were helping him behind the counter for a change!
