Ring Road bridge works signed off

Plans to build a new footbridge over the A6120 Outer Ring Road have edged a step closer to reality.

As reported by WLD in September, work is due to begin ‘early in 2026’ on an accessible footbridge over the ring road near Calverley Lane. The bridge work, due to take about 12 months to complete, is intended to link the communities of Calverley and Farsley.

Council planners have just signed off a construction and management plan as part of the planning conditions attached to the initial planning application.

Proposals include closing all lanes for 72 hours to install the bridge structure over an unspecified weekend.

The project will encompass spiral cycleway ramps either side and bridge with the associated earthworks to support the ramps.

The bridge will be part of the wider £23m Connecting West Leeds scheme to upgrade the Leeds outer ring road, including new footpaths and cycleways, junction upgrades and a reduced 50mph speed limit on the A6120 between Horsforth roundabout and Dawsons Corner.

Documentation surrounding the conditions can be found here.

  1. Where and when was the so called consultation
According to the dates decision was approved before end of so called consultation
    Decision 27th JANUARY
    Consultation 28th JANUARY
Again no one gets a say
    Just another botch up like
Spending on a cycle lanes wider than the car lanes
That will never achieve any usage except when they pull out staff for a photo shoot lol

    • Ah yes but they will have their best frocks on.
I don’t see why a set of Traffic Lights wouldn’t serve the purpose and be more cost effective.

      • Totally agree. It’s another scandalous waste of Central Government funding again ( spend it or lose it) . Noone in officialdome has ever satisfactorily explained why Leeds ring road is mainly single carriageway. . . Manchester M60 EIGHT!

    • Consultation likely was considered as part of the initial works consulted for and announced a few years back:

      https://news.leeds.gov.uk/news/consultation-underway-for-a6120-outer-ring-road-proposals-between-horsforth-and-pudsey

Or if you give a quick google or research: ‘consultation ring road Calverley and Farsley bridge’ that gives you some answers about how long its been going on for.

As someone who contributed to that consultation, we did get a say. Admittedly I’m more annoyed that it was initially touted to be done in 2025 and has been delayed until

    • @Williams

1, there is no thing as “car tax”, you pay VED based on how much your car pollutes. EVs pay nothing, as would people who choose to travel by bike
2, we definitely do need active travel infrastructure. most people who use bikes also own cars. if your proposal is that everyone travels by car then you’d have even worse gridlock in Leeds than we already have
3, already the ring road from Horsforth through to Owlcoates is heavily used, not just by people on bikes, but walkers and i’ve even seen people in mobility vehicles use this valuable and mush needed infrastructure

      • Hi Nigel, that used to be true, but electric cars now pay VED.

It’s still less tax than polluting cars, but it isn’t completely exempt anymore. In 2028 there are plans to introduce a pay-per-mile tax scheme for electric and hybrid cars too. “Road tax” doesn’t exist, and it’s still inaccurate to say “my road tax pays for the roads!” because that comes out of general taxation, but at this point it is probably fair to describe VED (vehicle excise duty) as car tax because it gets levied against all cars. For what it’s worth, I’m fully behind it as cars create all sorts of negative externalities.

        • G,

          i stand corrected, thanks

i knew the pay-per-mile was coming in and i think that is a very good thing, one would hope that it would encourage people to leave the car at home for shorter journeys, which would be better for everyone, including drivers

  2. Leeds city council is a shambles, we have a Lord Mayor and an assistant mayor who guaranteed a tram system for the future of Leeds and Bradford only for us to be told that it has to be put back by appx 10 years we don’t get to see the report on why it’s put back we just have to believe what we’re told , it will never happen it’s all lies and excuses , scrap the mayor and her deputy as neither are needed and cost a fortune and spend the money there paid on a big heap of tarmac and fill a few holes in
Money well spent as the roads around Leeds are crumbling

    • The Tory government forced West Yorkshire to have a mayor. It was “no mayor no money” .
We weren’t allowed a vote. Now we have turned clock back over 50 years when West Yorkshire Metropolitan Council was forced on us and Leeds suffered a big setback with the other 4 councils dragging us back.
Brabins is having to do things again to keep the whole of West Yorkshire involved. . .an impossible and damaging position.
