Review: Bramley Community Arts Festival is a huge success

The first Bramley Community Arts Festival drew the crowds to a variety of events in the community this weekend. Community reporter Noelle Williamson was on hand to capture community arts and culture at its best…

Early arrivals at the Fairy Garden at Bramley Community Arts Festival. Come and find fairy houses, put on fairy wings and have your face painted in the Bramkey baths community garden. Stories and colouring, too!

Here’s a flavour of the Bramley Community Arts Festival afternoon show at St Peter’s Church. Tutti – who rehearse at St Peter’s – were in mellow form with beautiful arrangements of Beatles and Disney, and a lush, elegiac Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina undercut by a snare drum beating a quiet military tattoo.

The Bandstanders followed with their ukuleles, inviting us to sing along with songs from the Beatles, Oasis and old time music hall.

Then came DAZL Dance, who lived up to their name. The entire audience clapped and clapped as the five storming dancers leapt, swooped and rocked Contemporary, Streetdance and Breakdance. And then they invited the audience to join in and led them in two group numbers. The rest of us were content to sip cold drinks and watch. Wow.

Next DAZL Dance leapt into action with a lively set of contemporary dance, street and breakdance that had the audience clapping throughout.

In fact, despite the 20+ degree heat, several people joined in at the end and the five young dancers led them in two energetic group numbers. The rest of us were content to sip cold drinks and admire.

If you have a secret desire to join in, Tutti Community Concert Band brought instruments for people to try, and are inviting any musicians out there to get in touch. See tutticoncertband.co.uk

Ukulele players, the Bandstanders meet in Pudsey and are on Facebook and WhatsApp.

Do you want to dance? Find out more about Dance Action Zone Leeds at dazl.org.uk.

What do they do at Bramley Elderly Action? Sue Turner is knitting some answers to that question. Sue was at St Peter’s Church as part of Bramley Community Arts Festival to celebrate 30 years of BEA, and to spread the word about the weekly craft group that meets at Bramley Lawn on Mondays from 2pm to 4pm.

If you live in Bramley, Swinnow or Stanningley, and are into knitting, crochet or any craft, you’ll find company and welcome on a Monday afternoon at Bramley Lawn, off Rossefield Approach, set back from Stanningley Road.

BEA offers a weekly programme of activities and you can find out more at Bramleyea.org.uk.

Bramley Community Arts Festival continues today (Sunday). Full details here.
