Replacement roof plans at historic Armley church

By John Baron

Parts of a roof at a historic Armley church could be replaced, if plans are approved.

The parochial church council at Christ Church Upper Armley has applied for planning permission to replace a section of roofing at the grade II Listed building off Armley Ridge Road.

Proposals include re-roofing the North Aisle, South Aisle & Vestry. All three roofs would be stripped back at the same time, and the North Aisle re-roofed in Westmorland slates which are recoverable and re-usable from the other roofs.

The South Aisle & Vestry roofs – which the applicant says cannot easily be seen – would be re-roofed in high-quality Spanish slate. The modern membrane gutter linings to the Vestry roof would be replaced with stainless steel.

A design statement accompanying the application states: “While Westmorland slates would be favourable across all roofs, the project is being funded by grant funding and fundraising by the church and new (or reclaimed) Westmorland slates across all the roofs is not financially viable – it would result in an £18k uplift in costs from the use of Spanish, for the use of South Aisle in Westmorland.”

It concludes: “We would suggest on behalf of the applicants that the application meets the aspirations of both national and local planning guidance and will ensure the longevity of the use of the whole building for future generations, as well as enhancing the wider conservation area and that Planning Consent should therefore be forthcoming.”

The plans can be viewed in full here.
