Pudsey Leisure Centre will be closed over Christmas to allow for essential upgrading and maintenance to the facility.
The closure will run from Tuesday, 19 December 2023 to Wednesday, 27 December 2023 to allow Leeds City Council engineers time to install a new decarbonisation system early in 2024, Pudsey councillor Simon Seary posted on Facebook.
A council spokesperson said: “The work will allow Leeds City Council to achieve its long-term plans for Pudsey Leisure Centre and reduce its carbon footprint. The works will provide a ‘greener’ leisure centre for future generations through a sustainable clean energy.”
A planning application was last week submitted for an environmentally friendly ground level air source heat pump, plant room and sub station at the centre. Proposals also include solar panels on the roof.
The improvements will remove 10 existing parking bays at the centre.
A planning and access statement accompanying the application added: “A parking survey has been undertaken to demonstrate that there is capacity within the car park to accommodate the spaces as not to result in parking overspilling onto the public highway.
“The survey has covered the whole leisure centre car park and was undertaken on a Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 7pm hourly.”
The statement said the proposals will reduce carbon emissions as well as reducing energy bills. It concluded: “Although the development will be visible to the public when using the car park, it will not have a significant impact on visual amenity within the street scene, and as such there will be no adverse impact to the character and appearance of Pudsey town centre and Pudsey Conservation area.”
