Armley Action Team is inviting local residents near to Town Street to join them on Gelder Road this Sunday, 3 November, for a Play Street.
The group has applied to Leeds City Council through their innovative Play Street scheme. It allows residents to close their street to car traffic for a few hours so that children can play safely near to home.
The Play Street initiative has been championed by Child Friendly Leeds and is supported by LCC’s Highways Team to enable more children across the city to enjoy the safe outdoor play that many adults say they benefitted from when they were younger.
Gelder Road, which runs behind the Royal Pub, Town Street, will be closed to cars on Sunday, 3 November from 11am-5pm to allow local volunteers time to prepare the street and make it safe.
Local families are welcome to join the free-play session inspired by Leeds Festival of Play.
Fran Graham, of Armley Action Team, said: “Rain or shine we’ll be down at Gelder Road this Sunday from 1pm-4pm.
“We’ve been really inspired by seeing children making chalk-art on Victoria Gardens this week during the Festival of Play, so tell your young artists that we need their creative talents and the street is their (washable) canvas! Come play.
“The local young people we spoke to during the Gelder Rose mural project told us they wanted more spaces to play in, and more opportunities to bring colour and creativity to Armley – so that’s what we’re doing. We really want to thank local drivers, and the team at Highways and Child Friendly Leeds for their support.”
