Photos capture Sara Cox as marathon effort passes through Horsforth Hall Park

Sara Cox yesterday completed five marathons in five says for Children in Need when she crossed the finishing line at Calverley Golf Club. Community reporter SAM GILLINDER braved the rain and caught up with her as she made her way through Horsforth. Here’s his report and photos:

Sara Cox ran FIVE marathons in five days to raise money for BBC Children in Need.

She started this Great Northern Marathon Challenge in aid of Children in Need in Kielder Forest on the borders of Scotland and passed through four separate counties – Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.

The last day of her mission was treacherous as Storm Claudia produced heavy rain. Sara entered Horsforth from up the road in Cookridge.

Sara turned into Horsforth Hall Park and remarkably she seemed to look as comfortable as Mo Farah having barely started a marathon.

The weather at this point made this incredible. It had been cold and tipping down with rain all day!

Although she smiled she was clearly exhausted and looked determined to complete this huge contribution to the charity.

The Horsforth Hall Park leg of her visit, being very well attended, brought huge support for her.

Orange Lemonade, one of the youngest bands from LS18 Rocks, the award-winning live performance music school, played encouraging music as she ran through.

She headed out of Horsforth towards Calverley with the finish line almost in sight. Roughly five miles for her to complete this amazing feat. And there was no chance it wouldn’t be.

With the permanent passenger Pudsey Bear himself on her back, Sara reached the finish line.  She had journeyed through gruelling terrain and covered 135 miles.

£7.6 million raised for the charity at the time of completion – the total had risen to £9.5 million late last night. Who knows how much more?

  1. Is it just me or does anyone else wonder who at BBC Salford decided that Calverley is Pudsey*
…and that a posh Golf club in middle of nowhere was obvious place to finish?
    * Yes I know it was, before 1974, part of the Borough of Pudsey.
