Pedalling for Armley – 127 miles of hope

by Nelson Rodriguez

The Reverend Phil Arnold, vicar of Christ Church in Armley, is not one to sit still when it comes to supporting his community.

This time, he and his wife Rachel will be hopping on their bikes to take on the Liverpool to Leeds Canal Ride: 127 miles in just three days, from September 19 to 21.

The ride is part of the Armley Good Neighbours campaign, which aims to raise urgent funds to repair the church roof and make the building a safe, accessible, and welcoming place for everyone. Through this challenge, Phil and Rachel hope to raise at least £10,000.

For those who know Phil, this kind of challenge comes as no surprise. In June, he swam the equivalent of the English Channel (21 miles/34 km)—but with a twist: he did it at the local Armley pool, five hours a day for five days. His determination and willingness to push himself reflect his deep commitment to faith and to his community.

“Every mile, every stroke, and now every pedal has a purpose: keeping our church open and at the heart of the community,” Phil said with a smile.

The Armley Good Neighbours campaign has an ambitious target of over £300,000, but each step brings them closer. Beyond roof repairs, the goal is to ensure Christ Church remains a place where the people of Armley can gather, find support, and feel at home.

In addition, they could end the note with a motivational closing:

“We invite everyone to symbolically cycle with us: every donation is another step forward, every gesture of support is a ray of hope for Armley,” added Phil and Rachel.
