New Wortley course helps improve mental health

Improve your mental health by joining a free 12-week course being held at New Wortley Community Centre in September.

The course will allow attendees to develop a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), which is a personalised plan you can develop yourself and helps you think about getting and staying well.

Sessions are relaxed, friendly and informal and will allow you to discover simple, safe, and effective tools to create and maintain your
wellbeing. They will also help you develop a daily plan to stay on track with your life and wellness goals and identify what throws you off-track and develop a plan to support you.

The free sessions, run by the NHS’s Leeds Recovery College, are facilitated by Ruth De-Lissandri and are run by both professionals and volunteers who have lived experience of mental health issues.

Ruth said WRAP courses enable you to create a snapshot of yourself at different points on the spectrum of well to unwell.

She added: “Having people who have lived experience of mental health helps open up a lot of discussions and helps build community spirit and puts people at ease. Everyone can relate to everyone’s experiences. People will have that support around them, make new friends who they can contact. It’s about building relationships, really.”

New Wortley Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) course runs from Thursday, 8 September 2022, from 11.30am to 2.30pm, at New Wortley Community Centre. It runs over 12 weeks, with a break week at the October half-term.

Leeds Recovery College opened in 2019 and delivers a range of education and training courses that have been specifically designed to increase awareness and understanding of mental health, wellbeing and personal recovery.

Courses are co-designed and run by people with lived experience of mental health problems and health professionals, trainers and education providers.

The courses are open to all adults who live, work or study in Leeds and you don’t need to be referred to the college to book on a course. Simply enrol on the course or workshop that is of interest to you.

Booking required at: leedsrecoverycollege.lypft@nhs.net or through Leeds Recovery College Eventbrite page.
