New Wortley Community Centre jingles all the way to Christmas!

by Rebecca Hunter

New Wortley Community Centre has been jingling all the way through the Christmas countdown – and, boy, have they outdone themselves!

They kicked things off with a Christmas Extravaganza featuring Santa’s grotto, a tombola bonanza, a raffle bursting with epic prizes, kid-friendly crafts, the toe-tapping Man About Town Ukulele Band, the inspiring Philharmonic Chorus Choir, and scrumptious treats galore.

Then came the Centre for Warmth Spirit of Christmas event, complete with piano serenades, poetic musings from their Writing Group, a delicious dinner, and a surprise serenade by the Castleton Primary School children’s choir.

They even threw a bash for their fabulous volunteers to thank them for all their hard work this year. Plus, they rolled out a four-day Healthy Holidays programme for 120 children, including a trip to Flip Out Bradford, crafts, baking, multi-sports and breakfast with Santa!

Not to mention the Christmas treasure hunts on Jailey Field for local schools, packed with fun, hot chocolate, and laughter.

They’ve supported over 50 families through their Christmas Toy Appeal and another 50 local residents with Christmas hampers.

Big thanks for donations go to: Leeds Muslim Network, the team at Thornton Medical Centre, the team at Priory View Medical Centre, BAM UK & Ireland, Engie Leeds (UK), Sheila Nash, local superstar Christine who donates throughout the year, and Violet, a Rycroft Primary pupil who spent her pocket money on pantry donations and whose family donated lovely knitted Pom-pom hats for local kids. And a big shout-out to other individual donors!

But wait, there’s more! They treated 50 local residents to a homemade three-course Christmas feast and hosted a Pup Up Christmas Café for furry friends.

All this while keeping their regular weekly groups humming along. Seriously, where do they find all that jingle-bell energy?!

A New Wortley Community Centre spokesperson said: “We just really care about our community, which is packed with wonderful folks who look out for each other.

“And wow, do we have some characters! Every day is different here; we work hard and celebrate hard. We adore our group attendees and café regulars. If you want to dive into the fun, come visit us in the new year! Merry Christmas everyone!”
