West Leeds RUFC on Blue Hill Lane, Wortley, has created a new rugby team for boys aged 15 and 16 – and is looking for more players to join them.
The club has a long history and was created in 1926 by Old Boys and Masters of West Leeds High School. Until recently, the club has not had a team to play matches in the U15/16 age group.
Phil Christopher, chairman of the club told WLD: “The team has come about via one of the player’s dads whose older sons play senior rugby already. His younger son and his pals play rugby league in summer but wanted to carry on playing in winter.
“They approached us and asked if we could provide a facility and coaching so we reached out to some of our 1st XV and three lads put their hands up and said they would happily get involved coaching them and it all started from there.
“A few more lads came from other RL teams to bolster the numbers and some of the lads had played union before so jumped at the chance to give it another go. From what I am hearing they are a talented group and I can’t wait to see them pull on a West Leeds shirt and play a game.
“We still need a few more boys to join the ranks so if anyone is interested I think they will really enjoy it. Quality coaching, great facilities, great bunch of lads and the thing that rugby does better than most other sports is bond friends for life.”
If you would like to get involved, training is on a Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm until 7pm. Anyone interested is encouraged to come along or you can message via their Facebook page.
