New low sensory gym sessions launch in Armley

By Noah Roberts

New low sensory gym sessions will launch on Saturday at Armley Leisure Centre.

Centre manager Joseph Clough said it is a council-run public facility that has been used by people of all ages.

Mr Clough said he is creating an offer in the new low sensory gym session to provide a space “for people who need support, who are neurodivergent, have disabilities or may be worried about going to a gym, lack confidence about going to a gym or haven’t been to one before.”

Armley’s gym facilities had a full refit less than 16 months ago. It now boasts state-of-the-art new equipment, with over 120 workout stations, including free weights, weight machines and cardio.

Mr Clough said all staff have been trained in equality and diversity and he is keen to make sure everybody feels comfortable using the centre.

Experienced gym instructor Tracey said: “Exercise is for everyone. Everybody, no matter who they are, should feel comfortable enough to come to the gym.”

Sessions launch this Saturday, 14 December at 2pm and the following Friday night from 7.30pm. Contact the centre to book.

When the session launch attendees can expect to find a space with no television screens, no flashing lights and no music. Members will find it adheres to low sensory session rules which include respecting personal space and keeping noise to a minimum.

People are welcome to bring their own music as many love to work out to music, as long as they use their earphones.

Mr Clough said people can come to visit the gym and leisure centre any time and have a look around. “If it’s your first time at the gym you can expect a warm welcome. If you’re unsure you can ask for a duty member of staff to assist you,” he added.

Mr Clough is expecting the new low sensory sessions to be popular and hopes to introduce a midweek morning session for those people who need bring carers and support with them.

There are also silent panic buttons which can send an alert through to reception. The centre has accessible, changing places accessible toilets, that can be used by anyone when visiting the centre.

There is ground-floor level access into the building with car parking facilities outside and a lift inside take you upstairs to gym.

Memberships are available.

A new programme called LEAP Leeds, which encourages people to be physically active, is now open. LEAP is available to people aged 18+ who are living with health conditions. People living in Pudsey Bramley and Armley are eligible.

Armley also boasts a swimming pool, classes and the gym.

Mr Clough added: “We run a range of classes that are in demand by people who live in the area. Zumba and body combat are really popular. It’s one of two centres that boasts a hydrotherapy pool.”

They also have a small hall which can accommodate up to 45 people and this is where the Zumba and body combat session take place, as well as being used by local groups including a stroke recovery support group.
