Residents in New Farnley are set to meet this week to discuss a planning blueprint which could see hundreds of new homes built on potential sites in the village.
As reported by WLD, views are currently being sought on the Leeds Local Plan, a legal framework that will set out Leeds City Council’s vision and strategy for sustainable growth up to 2042.
The plan will guide how land will be used and developed. It influences planning decisions to ensure any developments meet the needs of the community and the environment.
A range of potential sites included in the consultation have put forward by developers, landowners, residents and others. They are not suggestions or endorsements from the council but were put forward in a ‘call for sites’ that the council must then evaluate to see whether they are suitable for development.
A Facebook group – New Farnley Planning: Save our Greenbelt, has attracted more than 500 members concerned about the potential impact on greenbelt land.
And a public meeting to discuss the potential impact on the greenbelt and New Farnley in general will be held at the New Farnley Community Centre on Thursday, 28 August 2025 at 7pm.
Proposed sites included in the plan for New Farnley include:
- An estimated 408 properties at Lawns Lane, New Farnley.
- Estimated 53 houses, land at Gildersome Lane.
- Estimated housing capacity 298, land west of Ochre House Farm, Wood Lane, East of Harper Farm/Harper Farm Cottages, Whitehall Road, New Farnley.
One local resident contacted WLD to express concerns over the Ochre House Farm proposals. It’s a controversial greenbelt site which has been put forward in previous planning blueprints.
They wrote: “It’s an ongoing issue of trying to build on this exact land and on our greenbelt – it’s not even the new ‘grey belt’, it’s actual fields that sheep graze on.
“As the people of Leeds we need to protect the West Leeds greenbelt as much as we can. Once it is gone, it’s gone, and we are only custodians of the land and our city.”
Elsewhere in Farnley, land to the north and south of Gamble Lane has been proposed for up to 354 properties.
The Leeds Local Plan consultation runs until 15 September 2025. The Leeds Local Plan on-line portal can be found by visiting the website.
