New cafe bar aims to bring “something different” to Pudsey nightlife

By Robert Hoskin

A new addition to Pudsey’s social scene has arrived with the opening of Ruby’s cafe bar.

The venture is run by first-time landlords Nicola and Jamie Vickers, who felt that the town centre was missing a night time venue with a quieter, more laid-back atmosphere than Pudsey’s other pubs and bars.

Ruby’s sits just off Lowtown in the picturesque Booth’s Yard, occupying a space that was, until recently, a store room for the New Worlds End pub.

Having spent a couple of years fruitlessly looking for a suitable venue, a chance conversation with the owner of the New World’s End resulted in the Vickers finally finding a building to house Ruby’s.

Speaking to WLD, Nicola Vickers said she was attracted to the character of the 17th century building, something that was lacking in the other venues the couple had seen.

Nicola hopes that the bar’s presence will help re-invigorate Booth’s Yard, which she remembers as being “a bustling little street” when she was younger.

In contrast the street currently houses only a few other businesses, including the Little Hair Nook Salon, Growlers Piemakers and Frank Eshelby’s Butchers.

If visiting Ruby’s, older Pudsey residents may remember that the building was previously part of the original World’s End pub, although some may be disappointed to discover that the jokey ‘Wimpyspoons’ sign has been replaced!

Although Ruby’s serves alcohol, including an extensive range of cocktails, the bar maintains a focus on hot drinks, with a selection of coffees, teas and hot chocolates being available to both drink in and for take-away.

While the centre of Pudsey already has a number of established cafes, including the Bean and Gone Expresso Bar on Lidget Hill, Cafe Rain on Church Lane and the Olde Booth’s Tea Rooms on Lowtown.

Ruby’s will be distinguished from these by its later opening hours, which will mirror those normally associated with licensed premises.

Nicola hopes these opening times will give customers wanting a more relaxed night out somewhere to go once the other cafes are closed.

Ruby’s also aims to be dog friendly, the bar being named after the owner’s labradoodle!

Nicola hopes that Ruby’s will attract a wide variety of customers, including dog walkers, people wanting to catch up after work, and those who, looking for a more sophisticated night out, might have otherwise travelled to Farsley.

Ruby’s is open daily from 9am. The bar can be contacted or followed via its Facebook and Instagram pages.
