By Noah Roberts

An award-winning production team will be hosting an event in a Farsley record shop to share behind-the-scenes secrets of music legends.

Charlotte Topliss, who lives in Farsley, is the production manager for an award-winning TV series about iconic music legends who have shaped music history. These include Bob Marley, Tina Turner, ABBA and Bruce Springsteen.

Charlotte works at Wise Owls Films, a small Kirkstall company which started on bonfire night 2018. They created When Legends Came to Britain, a BBC2 series which is still available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

In the TV series they explore the history of these musical icons using previously unheard interviews from artists and their fans. These include unseen archive footage such as Nirvana’s self-filmed home videos.

The series explores different musical genres including rock, pop and reggae and how high profile musicians changed the shape of Britain’s musical landscape.

Wise Owls Films us inviting members of the public to join them for an exclusive behind the scenes event on Wednesday, 12 November at 6.30pm at Record Plant, which is based at Sunny Bank Mills.

Charlotte, whose team recently won an award from the Royal Television Society, said: “This will be special opportunity to hear first-hand from the those who made these exciting documentaries.”

The live Q&A panel will feature directors Stuart Ramsay, Dhivya Kate Chetty and Kate Siney, who will share insights into how the films were created.

During this special evening the audience can expect to find out from the team answer to questions including:

  • Just how did Bruce Springsteen end up with a box of Yorkshire tea bags and crumbly biscuits when we interviewed him at his home?
  • What was it like filming on stage with Blondie in front of 100,000 people at Glastonbury?
  • And what happened when it looked like our Tina Turner film would have to be scrapped halfway through production?

Charlotte, who has lived in Farsley for the past six years, said: “I love being part of such a creative and music oriented community, you can find me at the Old Woollen in Farsley most weeks!

“The Record Plant in Farsley is the perfect setting for the live Q&A as it is the local record shop.”

It has recently celebrated its second birthday and is situated near to the Old Woollen.

Mark Robinson, executive producer of the series, said the he hopes the evening will: “Be a revelatory celebration of a brand which it has been an absolute privilege for the team at Wise Owl in Leeds to produce.

“We have travelled the world, met our musical heroes, and found out just what Britain really means to these icons of rock and pop – as well as what they have meant to us, through talking to dedicated fans with extraordinary stories to share.”
