Mixed reaction to Stanningley McDonald’s plans

By Sonia Koren

Plans for a new 24-hour McDonald’s drive-thru in Stanningley have sparked mixed reactions from residents and business owners.

As reported by West Leeds Dispatch today, McDonald’s has launched a public consultation on plans to build a drive thru restaurant at the site formerly occupied by the North Sea Chinese Restaurant and the Old Roundabout Pub.

This proposed development would create an estimated 80 new full and part-time jobs, 30 additional parking spaces, and indoor and outdoor seating.

While some people have welcomed the potential for new jobs and convenience, others have raised concerns about traffic, noise, and litter.

Jashtina Valand, a Stanningley resident and employee at JET, expressed her excitement about the proposal. “We work here, so if we need food, we can go easily,” she said. “We get 20-30 minute breaks, and McDonald’s has cheaper meals, so it’s really good for working people like us. We are very excited.”

Resident Isabella Jenkinson voiced strong opposition to the plans, and was concerned about traffic congestion and noise.

“We’ve got enough traffic along here. It’s congested as it is, especially at Christmas,” she said. “We’re constantly dealing with roadworks and don’t need the noise. We don’t need the flashing lights, and we don’t need our kids hanging around either – not a good idea. Houses, that’s what we need. Houses for our community.”

Business owners are uncertain about the development and are concerned about their customers’ worries. “I’m on the fence, honestly,” said Mark Rowlands, owner of the Jug & Barrel. “With housing, some are concerned about the noise. With McDonald’s, it’s the litter.”

The reaction was also mixed on social media.

One person said on Facebook: “I’d prefer a small business to pitch there.  McDonald’s are a big corporate who I don’t agree with. They may create jobs – which is obviously good, but their foot print and ethics aren’t great.

“The food isn’t very good and we already have an obesity and huge health problem which, in my opinion, doesn’t need adding to. Children (and adults) need better choices (and education), not more unhealthy food causing a plethora of health issues.”

Another added: “I don’t really care to be honest. Either that or end up with apartments on it. McDonald’s food is not very good though admittedly.”

Following the public consultation, McDonald’s hopes to submit a complete planning application to Leeds City Council in early 2025. If approved, the restaurant could open in 2025.

The in-person public exhibition will be held on 10 December 2024, from 3pm to 7pm at St Thomas’ Church Hall. Find the online consultation here.

The deadline for feedback submission is Sunday, 15 December, 2024.
