It’s a sad sight, depending on your point of view: demolition work has started on the Merry Monk pub in Burley.
Local resident – and campaigner against the demolition – Stuart Long shared this photograph of the work with us, calling it the ‘death’ of the Merry Monk.
Wortley-based RDF Building will be building two semi-detached houses and two blocks of three and four terrace houses with parking for 18 cars on the site off Kirkstall Hill.
The pub closed last August and a group of Kirkstall residents led by Mr Long won the right to get the pub listed as an asset of community value in September that year.
Sadly for them it wasn’t enough to save the pub.
