Match report: Brave Yarnbury fall to Wath

By Billy North Lewis

Yarnbury suffered their second successive league defeat after losing to Wath Upon Dearne.

After a narrow defeat against Old Rishworthian, Yarnbury were seeking a big win at Brownberrie Lane over Wath; it had been four years since they last won against them.

A cross-field kick by fly half Danny Pound saw the ball bounce perfectly into the hands of winger Ole Rigby for the first try. Pound scored the conversion to give Yarnbury an early 7-0 lead.

It wouldn’t take long for Yarnbury to get their second try after winger Harrison Smith made it impossible for any Wath player to stop him to score at the corner. Pound managed to get a superb conversion, having not worn his kicking boots last time round.

After a great start for Yarnbury, Wath were able to finally strike back with a try of their own but no conversion to keep Yarnbury in a comfortable position. Wath would continue with their comeback; centre Harry Hermitage managed to break through the Yarnbury defence to score underneath the posts. Two points would be added this time to put the score 14-12 to Yarnbury at half time.

Wath started the second half strongly, with winger Ben Cairns scoring a try at the corner courtesy of a successful maul on the five-metre line making him have clear space for the try.

Another successful maul saw replacement forward James Thompson dive over the line for the bonus point try and a conversion to put Wath 14-26 up.

Yarnbury would bounce back after conceding four tries in a row; debutant Tom Lachendro crashed through Wath to score a try. A big two-pot pint would be waiting for him after a try on debut for the first XV.

Despite Yarnbury coming back into this game, Wath would make them pay with the power of prop Brandon Coult to also crash his way through for the try. Yet another conversion would put Wath in a 14-point lead.

Yarnbury would not give up so easily as they would get something out of this game with a try bonus with flanker Cam Newby making a thunderous run to score a great try. One more try and conversion would see Wath take the win after a first-half scare.

Another defeat for Yarnbury – but not dropping far from where they were, as they go down from third to fourth.

The next game Yarnbury will be an away trip to Wensleydale as they look to get back to winning ways. Final score at Brownberrie Lane, Yarnbury 24, Wath 40.
