The Friends of Wortley Rec group have been successful in securing funds to create a free library at the Wortley park after seeing similar projects approved in the local area.
The library opened this week and is located at the Highfield entrance. It is available for Wortley residents to use free of charge.
Jamie Scully, Chair of the Friends of Wortley Rec group, said: “We wish to thank councillor Adrian McCluskey, who sponsored our application for Ward Based Initiative funding for the Little Free Library.
“Without his help and support, this community resource would not have been possible.”

The library is free, with easy and inclusive access to books for all – supporting literacy and encouraging a love of reading in the community.
The Friends group hope that by re-circulating books, it will reduce waste, support reuse, and promote greener communities. With goals to encourage generosity and community values,
Operating on trust, the Little Free Library will foster giving, ownership and shared responsibility.

Cllr Adrian McCluskey (Lab, Farnley and Wortley) supported the project. He said: “Since being elected, I have been concerned about the shortage of library facilities in the ward.
“I decided to use Ward Base Initiative funding, and working with the Friends of Wortley Rec paid for the construction and installation of the library. I hope that this will be a valuable facility that encourages reading at all ages.”

The group has lots of activities in the pipeline including a festive wreath making event. This will be held on Saturday, 29 November from 1pm-3pm at Highfield Methodist Church, Highfield Avenue, LS12 4BU.
This will be a pay-as-you-feel event with cash or card payments accepted. Refreshments will be available and donations of foliage are welcomed.
