Leeds Lord Mayor visits the Horsforth Community Garden

By Sam Gillinder

Leeds Lord Mayor Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung paid an unofficial visit to the Horsforth Community Garden to mark its opening.

As reported by West Leeds Dispatch the gardens were officially opened to the public in March when Councillor Emmie Bromley cut the ribbon on behalf of the Mayor.

Councillor Marshall Katung was unable to attend at that date because due to a bereavement she had to take time off from her engagements and return to Africa for a short spell. She was born in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria.

She was the first African to be elected to Leeds City Council and the first black representative on the Cooperative Party National Executive Council.

Councillor Marshall Katung gained a bachelor’s degree in Business Education whilst living in Africa graduating from Ahmadu Bello University.  She later moved to Leeds and pursued a master’s degree in Development Studies whilst at the University of Leeds.

The idea for opening these gardens was conceived in March 2021 by Janet Little.  She contacted Penny Pinn and the process of creating the gardens started there.

The group of volunteers known as the Friends of Horsforth Hall Park worked hard to create a special place for the public to enjoy.

ABCD Community Builder Clare Evans said: “The success of these projects is that it creates friendships”.

Within the garden there are now a diverse range of plants and there are plans to grow some fruit trees.  Apples, plums and cherries will be grown.
