Learn how to write sports reports at latest Dispatch community reporters’ course

Would you like to write reports and help raise the profile of your local sports team, or celebrate local sporting success?

West Leeds Dispatch is running another of its free and fun community reporter courses for people living in West Leeds, but this time we’re focussing on grass roots sport.

The course is ideal for people interested in writing match reports or general news reports from a local team, sport or individual. You could be a member of a local golf or tennis club, a parent whose child plays in a junior team, or a fan of a local club or organisation. Or it could be you’re interested in crown green bowling, boxing or whatever!

The three-week course will be run by WLD editor John Baron, who has more than 30 years’ experience in journalism, including The Guardian.

He’ll also be joined by Horsforth’s James Bovington, who is a former teacher whose articles on combat sports and the young men and women who take part have been published in numerous publications across the North of England, including WLD.

Schedule

  • Week one will be an introduction to the course. It will also see an introduction to photography with John and we’ll also consider some legal and ethical stuff such as copyright and photo consent.
  • Week two we will look at how we structure a news article with John and what makes your article of interest to readers.
  • Week three will see James Bovington offer some useful tips on sports writing from his experience and there will also be time to chat and go through your ideas.

Details & booking

The free course runs on Thursdays, 16, 23 and 30 April, from 7-9pm, in WLD’s community newsroom at Bramley Lawn Social Centre, Rossefield Lawn, Bramley LS13 3TG.
