Kirkstall Road gym allowed 24-hour opening

A West Leeds gym will be allowed 24-hour opening after permission was agreed with the council.

Jetts Gym said it was planning to open a 24-7 facility at its new premises at 385 Kirkstall Road.

The site, part of a retail park occupied by Asda, Greggs and Starbucks, was formally Coach Gym, which opened until 10pm Monday to Friday and 8pm at weekends.

Leeds City Council agreed to remove a planning condition on the building which restricted the opening hours.

A planning report by Jetts said: “There is increasing demand for flexible opening of leisure and fitness facilities.

“Patterns of use are changing and customers expect more flexibility in service provision to reflect their expanded needs and desires for use to suit their changing lifestyles.”

Jetts said extending the opening hours would not result in noise nuisance for people living nearby.

The report said: “The existing gym is also a community facility and helps to bring people together in a social environment.”

A council planning officer’s report said there was room at the site for customers to park away from residential properties.

It said: “In addition, the existing and continued use as a gym provides wider public health benefits, allowing local residents and wider users to keep fit and improve health and well-being.”
