Kirkstall land sale to make way for homes

By Don Mort, local democracy reporter

A plot of council land is set to go up for auction and could be used for a housing development.

Leeds City Council said the vacant land at Lea Farm Drive in Kirkstall was surplus to its requirements.

A council report said the site would be suitable for the buillding of five detached houses.

It said: “It is likely the site will attract a number of buyers, including self-builders.”

Selling the land would raise much-needed cash for the authority, and relieve it of future maintenance costs.

The report said: “The land is vacant and whilst it is in council ownership then grass cutting, and other responsibilities will remain with the council.

“A disposal will remove these responsibilities and associated costs.”

The council said it was decided the land was not suitable for its own house-building plans.

A sale by public auction was likely to bring in the highest price for the site, the report said.

It said: “There is a risk that the land may not sell. However, this is unlikely given recent auction results which demonstrate strong interest in similar sites, of this type and value.”

The site will be sold by auction within the next six months.

WLD reported earlier this month that nearby land at Cragside Walk in Hawksworth Wood, which was earmarked for residential use, was sold at auction for £60,000. The council’s sale of Abbey Lodge and depot on Morris Lane, Kirkstall also raised £475,000.
