Kirkstall: Flats plan for former social club

By Don Mort, local democracy reporter

A former social club could be demolished to make way for flats after being sold by the council.

A development of 29 apartments could be built on the site of the vacant Leeds Postal Workers Club in Kirkstall.

Developer Artisan Real Estate is seeking planning permission for the project near the junction of Kirkstall Road and Kirkstall Lane.

The company, which built neighbouring housing development Abbey Court, approached Leeds City Council with an offer to buy the site in 2024.

Artisan said the former club was in need of total demolition due to a lack of maintenance.

A design report said: “The postal workers club went into liquidation in 2022 and has not been open as a trading business since that time.

“Artisan have acquired the former club building from Leeds City Council to demolish it and form a new three-storey apartment building comprising 29 dwellings.”

The apartment block would be designed to match the wider housing development of more than 200 homes at the former Kirkstall District Centre.

The project would replace the two-storey brick and concrete club with 13 one-bedroom and 16 two-bed flats.

The report said: “It is a very dated building, in need of demolition and total replacement due to lack of historic maintenance.

“As such it is a failing building, offering no comfort and any possible redevelopment proposals would cost significantly more than the building’s worth.”
