Get in touch with nature and join Scrap – centre of creative reuse in Farsley for the Wild Service Festival this October.
Wild Service is a book by Nick Hayes, of the national campaign Right To Roam, and is all about ‘why nature needs you’.
The festival is a combination of free and paid events encompassing visual poetry, music, spoken word, talks, and workshops, the Wild Service Festival celebrates the creative and practical ways we can simultaneously reconnect with and become better guardians of nature, while improving our well-being through the power of participation. It concludes with a half-term week of children’s events.
Starting with a free launch event on Saturday, 11 October, from 2pm there is a private viewing of ‘O Barc Odes From The Edgerhow’. Poet, artist and activist Briony Spandler has created an innovative visual poem from observations made of a single hedgerow and its entanglement with litter.
At 3pm Briony Spandler will discuss her collaboration with ecologists, scientists, and activists, which led to the creation of her poem and the Wild Service Festival.
At 4pm Floating Temples will feature the solo musical work of Jonathan Mallatratt, an indie-folk writer-guitarist.
4.30pm will see oetry from Gracie Spandler, who navigates life through writing and rhyming about her experiences.
Information and in-person advice will be available from 2pm on the day with Right To Roam – West Yorkshire and representatives from Wildlife Friendly Otley, the UK’s first wildlife-friendly town, who will explain their work and how to make your town wildlife-friendly too.
Saturday, 18 October features two talks at Scrap, which is based at Sunny Bank Mills.
11am sees Dom Barry talk about Creating Trash Free Trails. Dom will delve into their A-Team’s pioneering work and share the shocking science about the trash they’ve collected in the attempt to protect beloved outdoor spaces from single-use pollution.
At 1pm Dr Amy-Jane Beer talks about Wild Service – Why Nature Needs You. Dr Beer will explore the concept and ethos of Wild Service, a Right to Roam call to action outlined in the 2024 book of the same name, co-authored by 13 diverse voices from the campaign and its associates.
On Saturday, 25 October Discover Hedgerow Arts. Learn how to unleash your creativity and delve into the artistic secrets of the native hedgerow in these two workshops with natural artist Paula Taylor of Taylorbird Botanicals @taylorbirdbotanicals.
