Farsley Celtic captain Lewis Turner suffered a suspected cardiac arrest during his club’s FA Trophy game at Gateshead.
Play was suspended on 28 minutes as the 32-year-old defender was resuscitated on the pitch and then rushed to hospital by ambulance.
A club statement said: “In tonight’s FA Trophy match with Gateshead, our captain Lewis Turner suffered a suspected cardiac arrest.
“Thanks to the superb professional work by the medical staff and paramedics Lewis was resuscitated and was taken to hospital.
“It is with great relief and happiness that we can report that Lewis is conscious and talking.
“We will provide further updates as and when it is appropriate to do so.
“We have been in contact with the relevant governing bodies, and in conjunction with them we will be offering all the support possible to Lewis, his family, and the other players and staff.
“Incidents like this put life into context and we hope you will all join us in wishing Lewis and his family all the very best and we look forward to seeing him again soon.”
Play was stopped in the 28th minute as medical staff rushed onto the pitch to attend to Turner. The third-round tie was abandoned about 25 minutes after Turner’s collapse, with hosts Gateshead leading 1-0.
Well wishers were quick to take to social media following the incident.
Turner’s former club Leeds United posted: “The thoughts of everyone at LUFC are with Lewis at this time and we’re all wishing him a speedy recovery.”
And other clubs including Scarborough, Scunthorpe, York City, Buxton, Eastleigh, Chorley, Southport, Chester, Spennymoor, Marine, Needham Market, Guiseley and Garforth were amongst those sending their best wishes.
Former Farsley manager Adam Lakeland, now in charge of Kings Lynn, added: “Absolutely gutted to hear about this. My thoughts are with you Lewis Turner and everything crossed for a speedy recovery.”
Fans also sent their prayers to Turner on social media.
“Thoughts with Lewis, his family and all connected to the club. Hope for a speedy recovery, and wish Lewis well,” one person posted on X.
“Thoughts and best wishes Lewis. Praying for a speedy recovery for you,” one wrote on X. Another added: “Was so scary to watch. Hope and pray he recovers well. Hope all of the rest of the team are OK too as that must be terrifying to see happen to a team mate and captain. Take care.”
