Farsley Celtic hit for six at Gateshead in latest friendly

Farsley Celtic’s unbeaten pre-season run came to an abrupt end as they were beaten 6-0 at National League side Gateshead.

The game was organised at short notice after The Celts’ original fixture against Bradford Park avenue was postponed earlier this week.

After a series of games against lower league opposition, full-timers Gateshead were always going to prove tough opponents as they play in the division above Farsley and are one of the favourites for promotion to League Two this season.

It was a tough afternoon on Tyneside for the village team from West Leeds.

The Celts found themselves 3-0 down at half time as they struggled defensively. But they could have been on the scoresheet themselves with Danny Greenfield – who already looks a shrewd acquisition – twice going close and the Gateshead keeper saving when Farsley went through one on one.

The second half was one-way traffic, with the hosts adding another three goals.

Pre-season is all about building fitness and gaffer Clayton Donaldson and his team will view the workout as useful as the Celts build up the minutes against better quality and fitter players following matches against lower league opponents.

The Celts conclude their pre-season campaign at Hull City U21s on Tuesday night ahead of their National League North opener at Rushall Olympic next Saturday.
