Hollybush: Party – Blue Plaque Unveiling to Celebrate Joseph Whitwell

June 5 @ 3:30 pm

Leeds Civic Trust are delighted to be unveiling our 195th blue plaque to celebrate Joseph Whitwell!
Joseph Whitwell pioneered forcing rhubarb for commercial purposes at Hollybush Farm in the 1860s. By 1871 his huge enterprise employed 28 people. In 1880, the Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society reported that Joseph Whitwell was the largest grower of forced rhubarb in a single location!
Did you know about Leeds’ claim to forced rhubarb growing?
