Council: Flats plans submitted for Queenswood Drive

By John Baron

Plans to build 21 new local authority houses in Kirkstall have been submitted.

Leeds City Council is hoping to build 21 new apartments on the corner of Queenswood Drive and Spen Lane, on the site of the old Beckett Park Community Centre.

The building would consist of 15 one-bedroom apartments, and six two bedroom apartments. Leeds City Council says there is a shortage of affordable housing in the area.

A design statement submitted with the application states: “The proposed development at Queenswood Drive represents a significant opportunity to deliver high-quality, sustainable, and inclusive housing while making efficient and sensitive use of a redundant brownfield site.”

The site is the former home to two community buildings that were demolished in 2023 – the Beckett Park Community Centre and the Queenswood Day Care Centre.

A public consultation and two ‘drop in’ events were held earlier this year. Feedback included parking and traffic concerns, overlooking and privacy, housing mix, accessibility for older people, and the impact on green space and wildlife.

The planning statement added: “Detailed building layouts have been developed and refined, confirming the internal configuration of individual apartment types to deliver the required mix. Plans have been reviewed collaboratively and adjusted where necessary to ensure they meet current standards for space, adaptability, and comfort.”

The plans can be viewed in full here.
