A community art project is inviting residents to participate in an event celebrating textiles and stories.
The event, which will take place tomorrow (Saturday, 14 December) at Farsley Library from 10am to 1pm, is the Spinning Tales Community Project’s final photography session.
Residents can bring their textiles, share their stories, and have their cherished pieces photographed. Each story will create a large-scale mural that resembles a patchwork quilt. The unveiling of the finished piece will take place in the Spring.
Local artist Alaina Dunne launched Spinning Tales earlier this year, receiving funding from the Leeds Cultural Investment Programme. The project explores people’s emotional connection with textiles and fabrics.
“We all have pieces in our homes that we cherish and can’t part with when we’re having a clear out,” says Ms Dunne. “I’m interested in hearing the stories behind people’s precious pieces and why they’re so important.”
The initiative hosted its first photography session during the Threads Textiles Festival at Sunny Bank Mills in June. Community members brought their contributions to be photographed by Tom Jackson while sharing the personal stories behind the pieces.
