The founder of the Horsforth Brewery Mark Costello wants the breweries of Leeds to expand the wholesale of their products and encourage more venues to stock beer that’s brewed in Leeds.
There are 22 active breweries located in the city of Leeds and 19 of them showcased their beers at the Brewed In Leeds Beer Festival held at the Horsforth Brewery at the weekend.
The release of the Ich Bin Ein Loiner was much anticipated.

Based on a Dortmund style pilsner (Leeds is twinned with Dortmund) it seems it’s telling us that it comes from Leeds as it uses the word Loiner which has been historically used as a chant by the Leeds fans from the stands at elite rugby matches. Ich bin ein translates from German to “I am a…”
It is brewed by a collaboration of 13 breweries in Leeds including Horsforth Brewery, the hosts for Brewed In Leeds.
For the moment it will be sold in six other venues including one in York.
Mark Costello came up with the concept for this festival to bring together as many Leeds breweries as possible into one place to promote the smaller businesses as he believes that they could be much more popular.
He wants people to realise that they “produce exceptional beer”.

Kirkstall is the largest brewery in Leeds. Other breweries include Northern Monk and Big Love.
Mark founded his brewery in August 2017 when he started brewing beer in his own garage. He has been serving from his current location on New Road Side in Horsforth since September 2020.
Over the weekend hundreds of people attended the festival.
Bartender Ellie Brosnan said “this is a celebration of Leeds beer”.
At the festival Meanwood Pizza served three varieties of pizza plus cheesy garlic bread and dip pots.
