Bramley: Former Hough Lane Centre could become flats

By Don Mort, local democracy reporter

A historic former school could be turned into flats if plans can be agreed with the council.

Permission is sought to convert the grade II-listed Hough Lane Centre in Bramley into 13 homes.

The site, which dates back to the 1870s, was previously owned by Leeds City Council and fetched £624,000 at auction last year.

A change of use and alterations to the building would see it turned into 12 two-bedroom apartments and a one-bed flat.

A design report said: “The site is currently vacant and has been for a number of years.

“The alterations will be a modest and sympathetic change to the existing building.

“The proposed work will ensure that the important heritage asset will be sustainably maintained going forward.”

The report said the gothic-style building was used as a school until the late 1960s and more recently as council offices.

A heritage statement said historic features of the building in the Bramley Town Conservation Area would be preserved where possible.

It said: “The proposed development offers an opportunity to find a new use for the building.

“Elements of the setting of the building will be improved by renovation, improving its appearance, particularly from Hough Lane.”

Leeds City Council formally declared the site surplus requirements in September 2024, saying it was too expensive to maintain. It was auctioned to help Leeds City Council plug a multi-million pound budget gap and had a guide price of £450,000.

The plans can be viewed – and comments ted upon – here.
