Bramley Baths’ swim school goes from strength to strength

For generations Bramley Baths has been teaching kids to swim – it’s a tradition dating back decades.

The Baths recently expanded the number of swimming lessons it provides to youngsters – and combined with providing lessons for 16 local schools Baths bosses reckon more than 1,800 kids a week pass through the doors of the beautiful grade II Listed Edwardian building.

The community-led organisation has long prided itself as being the ‘friendliest Baths in Britain’ and it’s little wonder its swimming lessons have increased in popularity so much that they’ve had to expand the number of lessons.

The experienced teachers follow the Dolphin Programme, which awards children at regular intervals so that they can keep developing and celebrate their achievements. Every child is assessed each term to make sure they are receiving the teaching support and encouragement they need.

Less experienced swimmers are assisted in the water by friendly teachers.

Arielle Hamlet won the Dolphin 3 category for backstroke and Dolphin 3 category runner up for front crawl at the Sir John Battle Gala.

Team Bramley Baths (BB) offers lessons ranging from babies and toddlers through to school age youngsters, through to advanced levels and training their own lifeguards and swim teachers – not forgetting adults who are also learning to swim for the first time (it’s never too late to learn!).

“Once you learn to swim, you swim for life. It’s an important skill that could one day save your life,” said swim school manager Jodie Millward. “It teaches young people to be safe in the water, and introduces them to the joy and fun of swimming.”

Bramley Baths swimming instructor Gez Flynn has taught three generations of youngsters over the years – and all the teachers at the Broad Lane baths are highly skilled, fully qualified and trusted. The swim teachers all have specialisms, for instance one is trained at dealing with kids with ADHD and special needs, another specialises in advanced swimmers.

All the children in the swim school are invited to be a part of the annual Sir John Battle Swimming Gala, named after the form Bramley Baths chair who led the campaign to keep the Baths open and become community led in 2013.

Additional places have become available to help shorten the waiting lists at the popular swim school. If you are interested in adding your child’s name, call Team BB on 0113 256 0949 or email hello@bramleybaths.com. More information can also be found here.

Edwardian Grade II Listed Bramley Baths is at the heart of the community.
